This program combines Thai highlights and romantic and lazy interludes like the Mekhala cruise, with engaging activities like cooking a 4 course meal.
Day 1: Arrive Bangkok

Our guide will meet you upon arrival in Bangkok and transfer you to your hotel for check-in. (none)

Day 2: City Sites & Old Bangkok by Riverboat

After breakfast, visit the Grand Palace and the sacred Emerald Buddha, the most important cultural icons in the Kingdom.  Visit the magnificent reclining Buddha before having lunch at a local restaurant.

Then cruise the small tributaries to the Chao Phya river, where life continues as it did 100 years ago.   Land near colourful Chinatown and infamous Sampeng Lane, Theves Market.  Return to your hotel to spend the rest of the day at leisure.  (B,L)

Day 3: Bangkok – Ayuthaya – Mekhala Cruise

Drive to the ancient capital of Ayuthaya after breakfast.  Destroyed by the Burmese hundreds of years ago, Ayuthaya was the last royal capital before Bangkok.  Enjoy lunch on the riverside before taking a local-style ‘long-tail’ boat to the Summer Palace.  Then your guide will bring you to the Mekhala’s pier for boarding.

Once safely aboard, begin the down-river cruise to Bangkok.  The captain will choose a picturesque spot where guests will be served candle lit dinner by the crew.  Overnight on board in your air-conditioned cabin. (B,L)

Day 4: Mekhala Cruise – Massage – Bangkok

After a delicious breakfast on board, continue the cruise to Bangkok, noting as the river’s banks get busier, and oper fields are nowhere to be seen.  Arrive in the late morning in Bangkok. After a rest at your hotel, have lunch at a local restaurant before setting out for a Thai-style massage at Wat Pho, Bangkok's famous natural school of medicine.

Later, visit Jim Thompson's House. A socialite American CIA operative who did much to promote the Thai silk industry, Jim Thompson created his exquisite Bangkok home from old houses taken from the north of Thailand. Now, the house is a museum, and showcase of Thai arts, architecture, and refined interior design.  Return to your hotel. (B,L)

Day 5: Bangkok – Chiang Mai Sites – Doi Suthep Mountain Temple – Night Bazaar

Check out of your hotel after breakfast and transfer to the airport for your 1-hour flight to Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai is Thailand's second largest city and the cultural capital of the north. Within the city are more than 100 monasteries, excellent shopping opportunities and wonderful restaurants of all types. Get your bearings during a Samlor (trishaw) tour to some of the city's most beautiful temples after lunch at a local restaurant.

Then you will drive up a beautiful winding mountain road to visit Doi Suthep mountain-top monastery overlooking the city far below.  This evening dinner is on your own, and then you should visit the lively Night Bazaar. (B,L)

Day 6: Chiang Mai Thai Cooking School

Today’s mission is to learn some secrets of Thai cuisine, and how to balance the subtle flavours & spicies.    This ½ day class begins visiting a local market to shop first for ingredients.

Then have great fun with Chef learning to prepare a 4 course Thai meal, which you can reproduce at home (we will give you the recipes!).     Enjoy the lunch you made by yourself.   Return to your hotel to spend the rest of the day on your own exploring this bustling capital on your own. (B,L)

Day 7: Elephant Camp in Mae Taman – Bamboo River Rafting – Chiang Mai

Visit the Elephant Camp in Mae Taman, where you will have the chance to see Elephants at work (a demo), and enjoy a chance to ride the elephants crossing the Mae Taeng river, up the hill and in the forest for about an hour.    Return by oxcart to our starting point, where lunch will be served.

After lunch, enjoy a rafting adventure along the Mae Taeng river, for around 45 minutes. Then, onwards to an orchid farm, where there are many beautiful species of orchid. Late afternoon, return to your hotel and relax at your leisure. (B,L)
